Main idea: Often in first/last sentence of paragraph
Inference: Implied, not stated directly — use evidence
Author's purpose: Inform, persuade, entertain, describe
Tone words: objective, satirical, critical, nostalgic, optimistic
Primary source: firsthand (diary, original study)
Secondary source: interprets primary (textbook, review)
Context clues: definition, synonym, antonym, example
Passage structure: problem/solution, cause/effect, compare/contrast, sequence

✍️ English Language Rules

Comma splice: fix with semicolon, period, or conjunction
Apostrophe: girl's (possessive), NOT apples (plural)
Affect/Effect: Affect = verb, Effect = noun
Their/There/They're: possessive / place / they are
Semicolon: joins independent clauses; separates complex lists
Active voice: subject does action — preferred in formal writing
Parallel structure: series items must match grammatically
Dangling modifier: modifier lacks a clear subject — restructure sentence
S-V agreement: singular = singular verb; collective nouns usually singular
Accept/Except: Accept = receive; Except = excluding
